Dietland Fan Fiction

6 Oct
Sarai Walker wrote a wonderful feminist novel called Dietland, which is a lot more than a criticism of fatphobia and diet culture.
Below is a tiny bit of fan fiction I wrote, possibly the beginning of something:
Jennifer straightened up over the mound of dirt, leaned on the shovel, and surveyed her work. The mound was an oval, about six feet long, and covered the remains of a sexual predator whom overtly misogynistic politicians elected for the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land. Yup, the entitled parasite wouldn’t be getting away with anything ever again, not in this lifetime. Jennifer sighs in relief and smiles faintly.
Her smile fades, and her sigh becomes shaky, as she mentally reminds herself: so many more sexual predators and their supporters to go. I can’t dilly-dally here.

As if I haven’t had enough Gaslighting

5 Oct
Every woman and girl in every patriarchal country has been gaslighted since the day she was born. The past two weeks have been a nightmare, not unlike being in an abusive relationship.
Today I realized that, emotionally, the past two weeks have felt like being in an abusive relationship.
The abuser in this relationship is the Senate judiciary committee. The abuser is the government of this fucking country, which has told every woman and girl, and every survivor of sexual harassment, sexual assault, or rape, that they don’t matter and that they are invalid. It has told yet another sexual predator that he’s so fucking valid that he’s fucking entitled to be on the Supreme Court, taking away women’s reproductive rights.
This calls for a REVOLUTION.
Facebook had an event on September 27: a rally in Portland, in support of Christine Blasey Ford, across from the courthouse. It began at noon, and I didn’t get organized in time to leave by 10 am…so I posted a comment on the event page.
“It’s too late for me to drive the 2 hours, so instead of attending, I’ll be revising a story about sexual harassment. But I’ll be with you in spirit.”
Just this morning–days later–an entitled male troll fucking reacted with a “laughing face” and commented, “What do you mean revise? Make stuff up?”
I became so furious that my hands were shaking as I typed. At first, I was going to reply before blocking the fucking piece of shit, but I remembered my usual policy of not replying to trolls. I didn’t want this smug and arrogant misogynist and possible sexual predator to have the satisfaction of thinking he’d succeeded. So I deleted what I’d started to write with very shaky hands, blocked the parasite….yelled KILL ALL MISOGYNISTS a few times, and then found the event again and posted this comment:
“The only good troll is the one under the Fremont Bridge. “Revising” doesn’t fucking mean “making stuff up.” It means revising, asshole. As in adding more details. Your attempts to gaslight and invalidate me only prove that you’re devoid of any redeeming quality.”
I then posted a variation onto my Facebook page:
“The only good troll is the one under the Fremont Bridge.
“Revising” an autobiographical story about sexual harassment doesn’t fucking mean “making stuff up.” It means revising, asshole. As in ADDING MORE DETAILS. Your attempts to gaslight and invalidate me only prove that you’re devoid of any redeeming quality.
And I really, really enjoyed blocking your evil, soulless, entitled ass.”
As a fiction writer, I do indeed make things up. I look forward to writing a story in which a group of vigilante feminists chop rapists, sexual predators, the politicians who gaslight us and reward sexual predators, and gaslighters. At the very least, I could post it on a fan fiction site as Dietland (by Sarai Walker) fan fiction.

What’s on your mind, Equal Rights Amendment?

3 Mar
“What’s on your mind, Equalrightsamendment?” (Be careful what name you use on Facebook, because you can’t change it for three months. That said, it would be interesting to hear the Equal Rights Amendment answer that question, if it could speak.)
A sign of the times… I came home to this stack of mail:
From the Wilderness Society, an envelope with this quote, “The oil is there for the taking; we just have to take it.” — Donald Trump [proving his attitude toward this planet and toward women is similar].
From the ACLU, an envelope with these words: “WARNING: Trump-style Attacks Spreading to the States.”
From International Planned Parenthood Federation, a red envelope with these words: “JOIN OUR RESISTANCE. Funding cuts for women’s health–you can help.”
From Emily’s List: “If you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re probably on the menu.” –Elizabeth Warren
…where are all the women? [next to a photo of a bunch of old white male politicians at a long table]

Pass the Equal Rights Amendment

1 Mar

Yeah, the ERA. You know, that thing Alice Paul wrote up in 1923 and hasn’t yet been passed in this overtly misogynistic country.

I just saw a screening of this powerful film, Equal Means Equal. Most of the grim facts were not news to me (feminist nerd), but that wasn’t the case for many audience members, and it’s an extremely important film.

PASS THE ERA AND CEDAW AND DISMANTLE PATRIARCHY.

During the discussion afterward, an arrogant, sanctimonious, and aggressive white male stood up and ranted against “the forty women” who walked out right after the film rather than stay to listen to the speakers. A woman in the audience spelled out to him that he doesn’t know why they walked out; he doesn’t know what’s going on in their lives. She pointed out that the woman who had been sitting next to her was extremely distraught by the film and had to leave. Did he show compassion then? No, he barked, “You’re just making excuses for them!” Um, I don’t think anyone present was in the mood to listen to an arrogant and hostile white male on his high horse. Fortunately, right after him another while male stood up and obviously was deeply moved by the film and said he’s ashamed of being a man right now.

Empathy-less Fools Wallowing in their Privileges

10 Feb

I read multiple books at a time and am currently reading the anti-rape book Asking for It by Kate Harding and the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Both books bring up something I find bizarre about our society: large numbers of human beings are victim-blamers and dismissive and disbelieving of victims/survivors of things like rape and police brutality… because these vast numbers of citizens believe that this reality is essentially just and kind.

Who the hell are these naive and callous victim-blaming idiots? Can anyone over the age of twelve live in this reality and have such assumptions?

Maybe these are all extremely sheltered and wealthy, white, able-bodied, cisgender males who have no mental illness (because people with such a clueless outlook must skip through life with major privileges) and who have only been close to people who share approximately the same privileges as they. They have very little empathy and absolutely none for underdogs, so they’re extremely not empaths (indeed, some are probably narcissists/sociopaths). They smugly wallow in their privilege and are extremely closed-minded and must not read much nonfiction or pay attention to others.

How can this reality contain such a vast number of humans who fit that description? Well, what I’ve just described does remind me of maddening white males who wallow in their privileges and take them for granted; I’ve had many a disturbing conversation with the likes of them. Furthermore, anyone who grows up female in this society is conditioned to be afraid of potential attackers at all times—try to avoid going out after dark, carry pepper spray, that sort of thing. So I can’t see how anyone female who has lived in this reality all her life and is over the age of four could possibly be one of these naive and near-empathy-less citizens who believe that most rape victims are lying about it and that there’s no such thing as systemic racism.

I certainly wouldn’t want any of these willfully ignorant fools in a jury or for a judge. Oh, yeah, that phrase “willfully ignorant”: perhaps that’s a clue as to how these people function.

Maybe they just spent almost their entire life in a totally different quantum reality, one that really is very fair and just, and where karma has almost immediate consequences, and just yesterday they crossed through a magic portal into this grim reality. I’d love to cross to the other side of that portal and live in a kind and just world! But it wouldn’t transform me into a willfully ignorant, callous, and victim-blaming… sociopath.

Even as a writer and reader of fantasy fiction, I don’t harbor delusions that this reality is a kind and just world. This country needs to wake up and have a great deal more empathy and compassion and be educated and aware about the very real and systemic misogyny and racism embedded in this society.

Kafkaesque Dumplandia

11 Nov

Here’s something I wrote to my representative and senators, about some of the latest insanity:

Penny Nance, Dump’s nominee for the Ambassador of—more like AGAINST—Women’s Issues is anti-feminist, anti-LGBTQA, and even leads a hate group, Concerned “Women” for “America.” She’s supported Dump’s so-called “religious freedom” order (to discriminate) and is extremely against legal abortion. The fact that misogynists like her were not aborted is a great misfortune. “She” is a Stupid White Male Trapped in a Woman’s Body, the extreme polar opposite of someone who should be ambassador of women’s issues. This misogynist, homophobe, and transphobe would be the Ambassador of Misogyny. The Ambassador of Bigotry. The Ambassador of Oppression. The Ambassador of Patriarchy.

We need to dismantle white male supremacy, not perpetuate or strengthen it.

See the Southern Poverty Law Center’s online article: “Trump Administration Taps Long-Time Anti-Feminist and Anti-Choice Activist for Global Women’s Issues Position.”

And here’s another letter I wrote to my rep and senators–two letters handwritten each in one day:

If Australia was inspired to make strict gun laws because of a shooting, then this backwards, barbaric, willfully ignorant, and white male supremacist country can follow suit. We must at the bare minimum ban assault weapons.

When I get around to writing a Utopian novel, it will be about a world in which there is no such thing as guns.

Furthermore, Whiteboyworld media needs to stop calling white male terrorists mentally ill individuals and call them terrorists. This is an extreme and deadly form of white male privilege. That’s another thing my Utopia won’t contain. I’m so fed up with these white male supremacists and their self-entitlement.

Oh, yeah, and that white male supremacist, Mike Pence, enjoys financial support from the NRA. So his hypocritical prayers for victims are beyond absurd.

Victim-Blaming Politicians

8 Aug

I received my first packet from Hand-Written Revolution, and after filling out postcards based on the writing prompts (including writing to that psycho Betsy DeVos and that other psycho, Steve King–not the horror writer), I wrote the following letters to my Senators:

Dear Senator,

The Secretary of Miseducation, Betsy DeVos, is such an extreme victim-blaming misogynist that she has consulted with so-called “Men’s Rights activists” (translation: men’s “rights” to oppress and rape women) about pretending that victims of campus rape falsely accuse their rapists. She wouldn’t have been nominated by Donald Dump if she were a real woman rather than a power-tripping, stupid white male trapped in a woman’s body. On-campus rape is a very real and nightmarish epidemic, as is rape in general. Only a psychopath would pretend otherwise. Being the victim of rape is horrific enough without additionally being put on trial and insanely accused of making it up. In this country, one out of every six women has been raped, and so have some men.

If this monster were a competent Secretary of Education, she would be addressing the real problem: the epidemic of campus rape and rape culture. If she were competent, she would do all she can to prevent campus rape and help the victims, not make their life more hellish. This monster needs to either wake up or resign, as do all the incompetent monsters Donald Dump nominated.

And here’s the other letter:

Dear Senator,

Representative Steve King is more frightening than a horror novel. He wants to cut funding for food stamps and Planned Parenthood to cover the costs of an overtly racist and xenophobic wall between Dumplandia and Mexico. His claims are erroneous, sadistic, sociopathic, and idiotic, as is his using fatphobia against poor people.

Defunding food stamps and Planned Parenthood is class and gender warfare. Defunding them for the sake of building that wall is nothing less than class, gender, race, and international warfare.
