Beware of Social Media

15 Jun

I need to take a break from Instagram, probably for about a week. It used to be about cat photos. But now I’m “following” (such a stalker-like word) so many feminist accounts, that it’s about arrogant and willfully ignorant trolls commenting that there is no wage gap, that there are only two genders, and that Muslims are a bunch of terrorists. No, no matter how smugly you pontificate, your delusions and lies aren’t going to come true.

The part about Muslims is especially baffling since the fiasco of an election. Um, the majority of terrorists in the United States are white supremacists who were born in this country. Dump has emboldened them: they’re out of the woodwork and terrorizing this country, even invading elementary schools and killing children of color. Every time the topic of white supremacists comes up, I imagine a force field around my property. I’m only twenty-five percent Ashkenazi (European Jew), and I don’t seriously think many of these bigots would take one look at me and instantly know I’m Jewish—after all, different ethnicities have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes—but it’s terrifying, not only for my family and me but for the whole country. That is not what the country formerly known as the United States should be like. Of course, I realize: it’s Dumplandia now.

Lately I’ve been keeping up on daily news, largely thanks to notifications from The Guardian’s app. And I’ve been reading political/sociological/activist nonfiction, such as this book next to me, Wolf Whistle Politics, edited by Diane Wachtel. It will be good for me to take a little break, for a few days, from bombardments of Dumplandia and read Buddhist books, instead.

Because One Letter isn’t Enough

I also wrote the following to my senators and representative:

White supremacists have been emboldened since the fiasco of an election. They vandalize Jewish cemeteries, leave nooses in Jewish and African American places of culture, invade schools, run over children, and spread hate.

And don’t excuse their behavior because you think they’re mentally ill; this is deliberate and organized hate crime.

Even if they had mental health problems, there’s no excuse for abuse and bigotry and violence. In the U. S., someone who’s psychotic goes on mass shootings. In India, someone who’s psychotic goes on a housecleaning binge. Dumplandia is a violent country. The murderous bigot at the Hollywood Transit Center is a white supremacist, regardless of mental health.

The government—local, state, federal—needs to take these terrorists seriously and lock them up. Please declare a state of emergency. Apathy is collusion.

Here’s a letter I wrote to my senators and representative:

I’m sure you’re aware that Donald Dump has emboldened aggressive and dangerous bigots across the country. Here in the Pacific Northwest, they have been particularly toxic of late, and not just the one who harassed two teenagers and slit the throats of their defenders. In addition, the KKK has been targeting elementary schools in Oregon and Washington. They threaten schools—including in Portland—and post hateful fliers. They run down children of color with their trucks and killed a Native boy. Reportedly Kung Elementary had to cancel their end of year carnival because of threats.

These terrorists are a threat even to children. They must be stopped. Please declare a state of emergency.

The Department of Illness and Human Disservices

2 May

I had a respiratory infection for much of April and otherwise was wrapped up in intensive novel writing with a little help from Camp NaNoWriMo, so I took a break from politics for a month. But I’m back, and here’s my latest letter to my senators and representative:

Dear Senator,

Donald Dump has nominated yet another deranged moron, Teresa Manning, to the Department of Health and Human Services, which apparently needs to change its name to the Department of Illness and Human Disservices.

Manning wrote a “pro-life” book (in other words, misogynistic and unscientific propaganda), ludicrously claiming that birth control doesn’t work and that abortion causes breast cancer; these are both absurd lies. She doesn’t respect women’s right to control their own bodies and dishonestly pontificates to convince the gullible into agreeing with her about taking away reproductive rights. This fool should not oversee our nation’s health.

This latest lunatic appears to be a cisgender female, which translates as a privileged, wealthy, white man trapped in a woman’s body who had her tubes tied.

Please do all you can to prevent this latest extremely unqualified nominee from getting the position.

Today’s Letters

21 Mar

I just wrote the following letter in triplicate, to mail to my senators and representative:

I hope you are doing all you can to prevent Dump’s so-called healthcare bill from replacing the ACA and making millions of regular people lose their insurance and go bankrupt, all just because this country is at the mercy of a psychotic and malignant narcissist.

Also, his budget plan is the stuff of nightmares. 60% of the federal budget is thrown away on military spending–an overtly sociopathic and patriarchal priority–and yet Dump wants to raise it, probably to 80%. This is in a country where education and healthcare are treated as luxuries, even though they’re needs.

Fund art, science, healthcare, and education, not war.

Postcard Avalanche Messages

15 Mar

During the post card/Ides of March party, the purpose of which was to overwhelm the White House with postcards arriving all at the same time, I was one of many who started out addressing them directly to Donald Dump but also wrote a few to my senators and representative, the politicians to whom I typically write. Unlike Dump, they are interested in what their constituents say, at the very least because they want to be re-elected.

I wrote a total of fourteen post cards. The following are some messages that I typed first:

Your actions are overtly racist, anti-Semitic, Islamaphobic, and xenophobic, therefore not representing the United States, a country that has been called the melting plot and for which France made the Statue of Liberty, a statue for the purpose of welcoming immigrants. Muslin Ban is unconstitutional.

It is clear that by choosing Scott Pruit you are attempting to destroy the EPA and therefore planet Earth, which makes me wonder if you really were born on this planet. You need to show us your birth certificate, not just your tax records.

Saying yes to the Dakota Pipeline is environmentally destructive in addition to racist and dismissive of popular opinion.

Your inept choices of nominations and your actions since your inauguration–indeed, just the first week of office—indicate that you’re attempting to destroy the United States. This country certainly needed change when the electoral college elected you, but your kind of change is the opposite of what we need.

We need the ACA, Planned Parenthood, and Medicaid. Just because the only people you see as human beings are wealthy white males doesn’t mean it’s okay to take away the rights of women, people of color, immigrants, and poor people. That includes the right to healthcare.

You gaslighted Americans by making up a bizarre and transparently racist and slanderous story about Obama not being a legal American, and you banned brown foreigners from predominantly Islamic countries from entering the U. S., yet you show flagrant disregard for people who really are Native to this country, by signing in favor of environmentally destructive pipelines through Native land. You’re a white male supremacist.

Today is Albert Einstein’s birthday. He was a civil rights activist, a vegetarian, and a peace activist, and he was a German Jew. He was a compassionate person, unlike you. You’ve inspired acts of anti-Semitic hate and have expressed no concern about these acts. Your silence is very telling.

It is a disgrace to the United States to have a “president” who has reinstated the callous and misogynistic Global Gag Rule started by Reagan. Poor women around the world need healthcare, including reproductive healthcare, in order to survive and thrive. Your backward and bigoted beliefs are your problem, not theirs.

Letter to Oregon senators about the EPA

12 Feb

Dear Senator,

Please do all you can to prevent that lunatic Scott Pruitt from taking over the EPA. When Nixon (yes, I know, of all people) started the EPA, the initials stood for “Environmental Protection Agency.” When Georgie Porgy squatted in the White House, it turned into “Environmental Persecution Agency.” This would happen again if Scott Pruitt, who doesn’t even believe in climate change as it unfolds right in front of his face, were to take over the EPA. Actually, we would have to rename it the “EDA: the Environmental Destruction Agency.” Pruitt hates the planet (perhaps he’s not from Earth); wishes to do away with the EPA (so I guess it would just… cease to exist before we could rename it EDA); and keeps suing the EPA; and has fossil fuel connections. With that in mind, nobody could be a worst candidate. The cat who just knocked over my stationery would be a better candidate. One of the mallards I saw splashing and swimming in flood water would be a better candidate; at least they respect the environment.

Cordially,

Susan E Wigget
